Occurrence
Golconda in Southern India has produced some of the worlds most famous diamonds. Brazil sources small but good quality stones, both Carbonado, and Ballas industrial diamonds. Alluvial diamonds are produced in the USA. Australian diamonds have historically been small and yellowish, however it is now producing white, pink and brownish gems. Ohter localities include South Africa, Borneo, Botswana, China, Ghana, Guinea, Guyana, Russia, Tanzania, Venezuela, Zaire and Zimbabwe.
General Gem Information
Diamond crystals form as mentioned above, with the octahedra being the form most commonly used in gemstones. With its adamantine lustre and very good "fire" or dispersion, this gemstone is the most popular. Diamonds also have a bluish-white flourescence under ultra-violet light which aid in identification. Blue flourescence appears in colorless to yellow diamonds, while others may show a green or yellow glow. There are several Minerals which are used to imitate Diamonds.
