The Nine Jewels (Navratna)
In Indian folklore, there are nine gemstones which are believed to directly influence the planets. They are referred to as The Nine Superior Gems and are shown below:
| Gem | Planet | Recommended Minimum Weight |
|---|---|---|
| Ruby | Sun | 3 ratti |
| Yellow sapphire (Topaz) | Jupiter | 3 ratti |
| Cat's eye (Tiger Eye) | Dragon's Tail | 4 ratti |
| Pearl | Moon | 2 ratti |
| Coral | Mars | 6 ratti |
| Emerald | Mercury | 3 ratti |
| Diamond | Venus | 1 ratti |
| Blue Sapphire | Saturn | 4 ratti |
| Hessonite | Dragon's Head | 4 ratti |
One ratti is equal to 2.25 grains by weight
Other gems are considered to be sub-gems of these nine. They may be substituted for the nine-jewels, usually according to their color. For example, Jade is green therefore would be a sub-jewel of Emerald. While 84 sub- gems were described in ancient Hindu scriptures, it is recognized that currently there are additional 39 sub-gems or sub precious stones. The sub-gems listed in the Hindu scriptures have varied uses, both medicinal and practical. For a list of the traditional sub-gems, please click here.
If a sub- gem is to be used in place of a Nine-Jewel, there are several factors to bear in mind. The sub-gem will not be as potent as the precious stone. Therefore, the sub-gem should be one and a half to double the prescribed size of the precious gem. An apt medical analogy is that a Nine-Jewel is an injection while a Sub-Gem is a tablet.
